This was our first tournament at the Lancaster Hall Hotel, and we would like to thank Udo Bauer and the German YMCA for their help in arranging it. It was played on Saturday August 17th, 2013.
We had 10 entrants including organser Mike Tobias, and played 4 sessions, with the hands being dealt at the table. There were 3 tables of 3, with the organiser taking seat 4 at each table in turn, using a system devised by Patrick Phair. This meant 20 boards were dealt at each table, each player playing 18.
The tournament was dominated by John McLeod, who made a complete mess of the planned prize structure by achieving the highest overall score (2746), the best session (1178), and the highest individual hand (168). Prizes were therefore awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall.
The remarkable thing about John's performance was that he played only 21 hands as declarer, losing just 1.
The mean value of the hands he played was an astonishing 71.81 the equivalent of playing Grand with 2 every time he won the bidding, and his raw score, before adding 50 and 40pt bonuses, was more than those of the 2nd and 3rd placed players put together.
